ENTRY 8: How to SEO your site

What does SEO stand for anyways? SEO stands for Search Engine Optimized. If you are creating a small site how search engines see your sight can be critical. If you're a big business like Jaguar or WallMart this might not be so important.

There are many factors that influence how search engines index websites. Although each search engine may have there own peculiarities I will outline some general guidelines that should be useful.

1. Domain name- I mentioned earlier in this blog that you should try to choose a meaningful domain name. The text of your domain name will be considered by search engines.

2. Use Meta Taga- Create an accurate title, description, and keywords that focus on words that you want to direct people to your site.

3. Headers and text size- Using headers such as H1 and larger text sizes will give text more weight.

4. Link text- The text used for any hyperlink is important.

5. Image titles- Search engines can't see images so always give text titles when displaying images.

DO NOT-

1. Word stuff. Back in the old days webbmasters used tactics such as word repetition to increase the DENSITY of certain words. For example, in Top Porn Review I might want to write:

PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN PORN
or
PORN REVIEWS PORN SITES PORN LINKS PORN GUIDES PORN DIRECTORY

Nowadays this will more likely than not get your site backlisted.

2. Overuse images. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well this is not true in the eyes of search engines. Search engines only 'see' text.
